GN 00307: Foreign Evidence

A. Procedure

1. Deceased a U.S. Citizen

Get one of the following as evidence of death:

  1. A report of death by a U.S. consul or other agent of the State Department bearing his/her signature and seal; or

  2. A certified copy of a public death record issued by a vital statistics office or Health Department in the country of death; or

     

    NOTE: Death certificates in Norway are issued by either the sheriff, National Register Office or probate court in the district in which the death occurred or was reported. See GN 00307.457 for information on death certificates from Denmark.

  3. A signed statement of death, if neither a. nor b. above is available, by the:

    • Physician showing he/she attended or examined the deceased at the time of death,

    • Funeral director who prepared the body, or

    • Clergyman in whose parish the deceased was buried (the church seal must be shown).

2. Deceased not a U.S. Citizen

Get evidence as described in GN 00307.200A.1.b. and GN 00307.200A.1.c. above.
