RM 10211: Alien Evidence for an SSN

You must enter certain data from the Form DS-2019 into the Enumeration System. On the "Proof of Legal Alien Status" screen, select DS-2019 from the Primary DHS Document field. Enter the data from the DS-2019 as provided in this chart and explained in each subsection. For information on the Enumeration System’s Proof of Legal Alien Status screen, see the SSNAP User Guide.

A. Item 1

For information on entering name and date of birth from Item 1, see RM 10211.375.

A DS-2019 for a J2 (showing the words “J2 Dependent” above the bar code) has an additional fifth line in Item 1, which shows the J1's name and gender. The rest of the entries in Item 1 refer to the J2 Dependent.

B. Item 2

Enter the name of the sponsor in the “Sponsor Name” field.

C. Item 3

Enter the:

  • “From Date” in the “Program Start Date” field; and

  • “To Date” in the “Expires” field.

When the J1 exchange visitor files for a Social Security Number (SSN) within 14 days of the program end date, continue processing the SSN application when:

  • the SSN application date is within the program begin and end date described in RM 10211.355A.3.; and

  • the J1 exchange visitor will be in the U.S. for 14 days or more from the date of filing for the SSN to receive the SSN card at the mailing address provided.

In this situation, enter the date the J1 will depart the United States (U.S.) in the “Expires” field.

NOTE: If the J1 exchange visitor does not meet all of these requirements, do not process the SSN application since the exchange visitor will not be in the U.S. in 14 days, the timeframe it takes for the SSN card to arrive in the mail.

D. Item 4

In the "Category" field, select:

  • "Other" if the category shown on the DS-2019 indicates employment authorization. (For a list of categories that indicate employment authorization, see RM 10211.345A); or

  • "Student," "Student Intern" or "International Visitor," as specified on the DS-2019, to indicate that the applicant requires a sponsor letter per RM 10211.345B.

The Enumeration System will determine which categories are employment-authorized and will require an entry about the sponsor letter when necessary. For information required on the sponsor letter, see RM 10211.345C.

E. Item 7

Enter the date shown in Item 7 in the “Issue Date” field.
