A. Entering legal name for an J-1 and J-2 exchange visitor

To enter the exchange visitor’s name in the Enumeration system, follow RM 10205.125.

B. Legal name for an J-1 and J-2 exchange visitor

For Enumeration purposes, the “SURNAME/PRIMARY NAME” and “GIVEN NAME” are the legal name for J-1 or J-2 exchange visitor.

  • “SURNAME/PRIMARY NAME”

  • “GIVEN NAME”

NOTE: Other U.S. government agencies, such as DHS, DoS and/or foreign government agencies may use different naming conventions from SSA’s.

C. Documents to use for J-1 or J-2 exchange visitor’s legal name

An exchange visitor with J-1 or J-2 classes of admissions may have several documents that contain their name. Follow the chart below to determine the document to use for legal name purposes:

If an exchange visitor (J-1 or J-2) submits a:

Then the legal name is:

J-1/J-2 with EAD, DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status), I-94 (Arrival Departure Record), and foreign passport.

Name on EAD is legal name.

J-1/J-2 with Form DS-2019, I-94, and foreign passport.

Name on the Form DS-2019 is the legal name, as long as name on the DS-2019 matches the name on the foreign passport.

J-1/J-2 with legal name change document, EAD, DS-2019, I-94, and foreign passport.

Name on the legal name change document is legal name.
