A. Introduction

SSA's initial and follow-up requests for evidence/information encourage the individual to contact SSA if he or she needs more time to comply with the request.

B. Procedure

Handle requests for additional time as follows:

• Ascertain the reason for needing more time; and

• Discuss how much additional time is needed.

Grant the following extensions based on the information above:

• the number of days agreed upon;

• another 30-day period if the individual is uncertain as to how much longer he or she will need; or

• a longer extension when needed for a good reason and the individual appears to be acting in good faith.

Update the MDW with any extensions agreed upon.
