DI 11055: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Disability Cases

A. Policy

When the claimant requests withdrawal of his or her application and the Field Office (FO) approves the request, discontinue development and process the claim. In this situation, an SSA-831 (Disability Determination and Transmittal) is not required.

B. Procedure for processing a request for withdrawal

Take the following actions:

  • If the claim is at the Disability Determination Services (DDS) and the FO processed a request for withdrawal, notify the DDS, advising the DDS to stop development of the medical evidence, and to return jurisdiction of the case to the FO.

  • If the claim development results in a denial before the withdrawal is processed, notify the applicant and process the claim as though there was no request for withdrawal filed.

  • If the claimant requests a timely cancellation of an approved withdrawal request in order to pursue the claim, process the claim as though no withdrawal had taken place.
