A. Background

In 1974, Cyprus was divided along the “Green Line.” U.N. troops maintain peace between the Greek-Cypriot population to the south of the ine and the Turkish-Cypriot population to the north.

The “Turkish Federal State” in the north is not recognized by the U.S.

B. Policy

Although the Government of Turkey has assigned an international mailing address to Northern Turkey, U.S. agencies do not use or recognize these addresses.

C. Process

Checks for beneficiaries in the Turkish sector show a Cyprus address and are delivered to the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia. Checks are taken by diplomatic car to the Turkish sector and mailed or personally delivered by the “Liaison Office” located there.

D. Procedure

Use the following rules for individuals living in the Turkish sector of Cyprus:

• Show the check legend as a Cyprus address and a consular code of 904 to ensure delivery of the checks to the U.S. Embassy, Nicosia.

• Do not use “Mersin 10 Turkey” or “Lefkosa” in any check legend or correspondence address.

• Route direct mail to residents of this sector through the U.S. Embassy, Nicosia.

• Resolve any doubts about the correct mailing address for an individual in Cyprus by requesting clarification from the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia.
