Procedure
Obtain identifying information before assigning an SSN.
1. Life Claim
| STEP | ACTION |
|---|---|
| 1 | Get a completed and signed SS-5. |
| 2 | Conduct the mandatory in-person interview with applicants age 12 or older with no prior SSN. |
| 3 | See RM 10211.500 if evidence establishes the applicant is an alien not legally in the U.S. |
| 4 | Develop full evidence of age, identity, U.S. citizenship or lawful alien status even if the claimant alleges having an SSN. This will prevent delaying the claim for further development. |
| 5 | See RM 10205.020 if the SS-5 application data is returned “unable to locate” (UTL). |
