A. Policy - corrective action

Initial and reconsideration cases will be returned to the adjudicating component for corrective action before effectuation in any of the following situations:

1. The case has another deficiency or incorrect action not formally defined which is:

   • unrelated to the onset date deficiency, and

   • requires return to the adjudicating component for correction.

2. The case is being reviewed during the waiting period and the deficiency can be corrected without delaying payment.

3. The claimant is currently receiving a nondisability Title II benefit that is expected to continue.

4. The claimant dies before the review is completed.

B. Procedure - review component

Return the case to the adjudicating component for correction prior to effectuation as follows:

• Code the appropriate group II onset date documentation deficiency.

• Prepare an SSA-1774-U5 and return the case to the adjudicating component.

• Instruct the adjudicating component to obtain the necessary documentation and to return the corrected case to the review component.

NOTE: Refer to GN 04440.228 for processing cases with a work activity documentation deficiency that could affect the onset date.
